Apple Maps broke our listings — here is what we learned

On a Tuesday at 9:14 AM Eastern an Asheville bakery — a single-location customer on Pinmark — opened its doors to find that the hours on Apple Maps Business Connect no longer matched the hours on Google Business Profile, Yelp and Facebook. Inside the bakery's owner thought the iPhone crowd could see that she was open until noon. The Apple Maps card said they were closed.

36 hours later we knew what had happened. The four-channel listing stack — Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook — is the only safety rail a one-restaurant operator has, and a single outage at any of them breaks the safety rail for the other three in ways most tools don't surface.

Apple Maps Business Connect went dark across most of the US that Tuesday morning for reasons Apple never publicly explained. The Bakery's listing on Google (the source of truth Pinmark reads) was in sync; our NAP repair push to Apple Maps had failed silently and re-queued for Saturday morning. So while the bakery stayed "open until noon" on three channels, Apple Maps showed the un-corrected Sunday hours from eight months ago — and an iPhone-using customer reading the Apple Maps card at 10:30 AM walked past and drove to the second-closest alternative.

The fix is the kind of obviously-fragile thing only a one-restaurant operator notices: when one of the four channels goes dark, the other three have to keep working independently, and the system has to tell the restaurant which one is missing. Today the Monday visibility report catches a channel drift by Friday — and that gap is the gap Pinmark ships to close.
